CSEA members give back and contribute to their communities on a daily basis. Whether coaching children’s sports, assisting a parent, or making sure that the campus is safe, people contribute. I was moved by the report given recently by Ed Gerber, Executive Director, Lestonnac Free Clinic. Mr. Gerber spoke recently at the Health care on the Frontlines Community forum in Santa Ana. The forum was attended by CSEA members, member leaders, trade unionists, and various community groups Mr. Gerber spoke of a local doctor in Santa Ana, who donated office space and his services to help those in critical need of medical care. A young lady also shared her story of how, without access to affordable insurance and medical care her diabetes has caused her to lose most of her sight. She is now getting care at a Community clinic. Pope John Paul 11 said “the equality of men rests essentially on their dignity as persons and the rights that flow from it.” Among those rights should include access to health care. At the health care forum one of the speakers commented on how many of the participants offered to assist where needed. One member offered transportation services to pick up food items for food banks and assist where needed. While we push hard on the Governor and Legislators to keep funding for our schools and Community Clinics, there are needs out there that can be filled by our members in the communities. I encourage you to be involved just as CSEA members are every day.
